"Winter" Energy Conservation for your Pool
Reduce Pool Pump UseThe first money saving idea is to cut back on the hours that your pool pump operates. During the months of October and November your pool timer should be set to operate about six hours a day. Not only will this save on electricity costs, but you will also save wear and tear on your pool motor, pump, and filter system. From December to February you should set the pool timer to operate 4-6 hours a day which means even greater savings. If you are not sure how to reset your timer, please do not hesitate to give us a call and we will try to walk you through the proper procedure. Or if you prefer, we will come to your pool and make the timer changes for a nominal trip charge. The explanation of why you can safely lower your pool pump hours of operation leads us to our next money saving tip. Less Chemical UseAs the fall/winter seasons are upon us your pool water temperatures will be dropping dramatically. One of the key factors in maintaining proper pool water chemistry for safe, clean, sparkling water is the use of chlorine, bromine, and other oxidants to sanitize the water. As water temperature drops the need to use chlorine and sanitizers drops as well. Basically, algae and bacteria growth increases as water temperature increases. Thus, during the swim season we need to use more chemicals to combat and control algae and bacteria. In addition, we need to operate our pool pumps and filters longer hours to not only filter out the algae and bacteria particles, but also operate the pool pump longer hours in order to circulate the chemicals needed to control these nuisances. Conversely, we benefit from less chemical use and electricity costs as the pool water temperature decreases
